The Trio of Liberty consists of world class musicians, saxophonist/flutist Don Braden, bassist Joris Teepe, and any one of a number of drummers including Gene Jackson, Matt Wilson, Winard Harper, Ari Hoenig, Steve Johns and others. Their music truly highlights the interactive aspects of straight-ahead, modern jazz. Braden and Teepe have worked together on various projects for over 25 years, and the expressive connection they have really comes through on the bandstand. That connection is also well documented on their recent critically acclaimed CD, Conversations, which was acknowledged by Downbeat magazine as one of the Best CDs of 2017.
The Trio has completed a number of successful tours so far, including Europe in 2016 and 2017, as well as some recent performances in the New York area. It was also recently featured live in performance on one of the world's great radio stations, WBGO-FM 88.3.
Individually, both Don and Joris have had many musical successes and experiences, as both have toured with and learned from many legendary jazz masters. Don has worked with Betty Carter, Wynton Marsalis, Freddie Hubbard, Tony Williams, Tom Harrell, Roy Haynes and many others, and has arranged for all kinds of projects, CDs and television shows. He has produced 19 CD previous CDs as a leader, and has been very active as a jazz educator all over the world, including a three year stint at Harvard University, his alma mater. Joris spent 9 years in Rashied Aliís group, and also toured and recorded with Billy Hart, Benny Golson, Sonny Fortune and many more. Besides touring, producing and arranging on a regular basis, he is currently the chairman of the Jazz Department at the Prins Claus Conservatoire in Groningen, Holland (where Don also works). He has 14 previous CDs as leader. Our CD has been in the USA Jazz Charts for 21 weeks and is selected by Downbeat as best CD of 2017.
